Greenhouse Shade Painting with Drones

Utilizing drone photogrammetry and spraying capability to effectivly and efficiently apply shading paint to greenhouses in WA.

We use advanced agricultural drones to apply greenhouse shade paint faster, more efficiently, and with more consistent coverage than traditional hand spraying.

Our drone system can cover in a single morning what would typically take up to a week using manual spraying methods, dramatically reducing labour requirements and operational downtime.

Each greenhouse can also be shaded to precise coverage levels depending on crop requirements. For example, cucumbers may require 80% shading, while capsicums may perform better with 70% shading. Our system allows these application rates to be adjusted in real time, enabling different greenhouses to receive the exact shading percentage required.

The result is uniform coverage, reduced labour costs, faster application, and better growing conditions for crops.

Introduction

Depending on the location and surrounding airspace, regulatory approvals may be required before operations begin. In most rural areas this is typically not necessary, but we always assess airspace requirements to ensure full compliance. Once approvals are confirmed, we develop a clear project plan and timeline for shading your greenhouse facilities.

Methodology

Planning and Regulatory Approval

Before spraying begins, the greenhouses are 3D mapped so we can generate a precise flight path for our spray drones. This allows us to program the drones to follow an accurate coverage pattern, ensuring shade paint is applied exactly where it is needed. This preparation reduces time spent on site while minimizing paint usage and ensuring consistent coverage across the greenhouse.

3D Mapping and Route Planning

Once flight planning is complete, we begin the spray operation using our agricultural drones to apply the shade paint. Project duration depends on the size and number of greenhouses. Smaller sites may take as little as 15 minutes, while large facilities can take multiple days. As a reference, approximately 10 hectares of greenhouse area can typically be sprayed in around 8 hours.
